Zirconium hydride has the chemical formula ZrH2 and a density of 5.6g/cm3. 

Its preparation method is the same as titanium hydride, and the hydrogenation reaction is often carried out at a temperature of 900 ℃. 

It is a stable powder that is stable to air and water under normal conditions.

 It can react violently with oxidants and strong acids, and it can burn smoothly when ignited. 

It begins to decompose at 300 ℃ in vacuum and completely decomposes at 500-700 ℃.

Zirconium hydride has a metallic appearance and a black powder. 

Generate heat of 124 kJ/mol, with conductivity between metal and semiconductor, when the pressure drops to 1.33 × 10-3Pa. At 400 ℃, hydrogen gas is released and becomes metal. It does not react with water and weak acids under normal circumstances and is easily soluble in 1% to 5% hydrofluoric acid. Can react violently with oxidants and strong acids. When ignited, it can burn smoothly.

The use of zirconium hydride

Zirconium hydride is used in industry as a flame retardant, flux, and ignition agent, as a moderator in nuclear reactors, as an absorber in vacuum tubes, and also in metal ceramic seals.

Titanium hydride and zirconium hydride have been produced and supplied in tons in the industry, but are mainly used for military purposes.

Zirconium hydride is a strong reducing agent. Used as an additive. Deoxidizer and desulfurizer used in the preparation of ferroalloys. Mixed with calcium carbide and nitrides, it can be used as a metal coating. Because it can infiltrate ceramics, it is used as a metal ceramic adhesive for vacuum tubes and ceramic devices. In addition, it is used as a neutron moderator and other materials for atomic power plants, as a vacuum tube absorber, flame retardant, flux, etc. The application examples are as follows:

1) Preparation of a hydrogenated zirconium surface hydrogen barrier coating.

2) Prepare a spray powder comprising aluminum powder, zirconium hydride powder, and boron carbide powder.

3) Prepare a touch screen silver paste.
